The Mª Luisa mine began operating in 1858.It belonged to the French-owned Hulleras de Santa Ana. It became part of Unión Hullera y Metalúrgica de Asturias in 1886. In 1918 work began on installing the Mª Luisa shaft, which was not to start working fully until the end of the Spanish Civil War. The Mª Luisa pit is one of the most emblematic in Asturias thanks to its history and to the popular song that includes its name. In 2004, a large plant dealing in aluminium was built on top of the old waste dump to the north of the pit. |
