Business plan (1994-1997) and 5th programme contract

For Hunosa, this plan included subsidies and aid for the sum of 300,000 million pesetas, aimed at stabilising production at 4.4 million tons, reducing the workforce by 2,000 jobs, closing mines (Santa Bárbara) and concentrating others (Fondón with Candín, Samuño with María Luisa and San Antonio with Santiago-Aller).

At the same time, the Modernisation Plan for the public business sector was started in 1996. This saw the constitution of Sociedad Estatal de Participaciones Industriales (SEPI), which grouped together the companies generating capital gains and that were likely to be privatised, and Agencia Industrial del Estado (AIE), which did the same with companies with losses and undergoing re-conversion.

Real production during each of the years of the plan stood at 2.6 million tons in 1994, 2.3 million in 1995, 2.5 million in 1996 and 2.4 million in 1997, with a workforce of 12,187 employees on 1 st January 1994 and of 8,792 employees on 31 st December 1997.
